Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma defended the candidacy of a Bengali Hindu from Bangladesh in the Dholai by-elections. Sarma argued that since Sonia Gandhi, of Italian origin, could lead Congress, Bengali Hindus residing in India pre-1971, and thus legally recognized as citizens, should also have political rights.
