The three sieves

Socrates asks a friend to sift his message through three sieves: truth, goodness, and needfulness. He admits that he has heard others say something, but he doesn't believe it serves any good. He suggests that if it's not true, it's not worth bothering with. He advises that if something is important, write it short and telegraphic, and reflect on Socrates' advice.
