Tropical storm forecast to enter PH as 'Ofel' whips NLuzon — Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines — As Typhoon "Ofel" whips parts of Northern Luzon, another tropical cyclone, "Man-yi" (international name) is forecast to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday evening, according to the state-run weather agency.

Nathaniel Servando, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) administrator, told The Manila Times that once Man-yi has entered PAR, it will be called "Pepito."

"Based on our forecast track, Man-yi, which is currently under tropical storm category, would enter PAR as a typhoon," Servando said.

At present, the state weather bureau said Man-yi was estimated at 1, 965 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas (outside PAR).

It has also been predicted to make landfall over the eastern coast of Luzon during the weekend, Saturday or Sunday, it added.

"Since this tropical cyclone may reach typhoon category while over the Philippine Sea, the possibility of Man-yi to reach super typhoon category prior to landfall is also not ruled out," the Pagasa chief said.

Although it was too early to determine the specific areas to be affected by Man-yi, Servando warned that most areas in Luzon were "at risk of heavy rainfall, severe wind and possibly, storm surge inundation which may cause considerable impacts."

Meanwhile, the weather agency raised storm signals over some Northern Luzon areas due to "Ofel," which was forecast to make landfall over the eastern coast of Cagayan or Isabela on Thursday afternoon.
