TOLEDO CITY, Cebu — Around 200 participants gathered 495 kilos of garbage during a coastal cleanup in Barangay Bato, Toledo City, on Friday morning. The cleanup covered both coastal areas and underwater zones within the protected Tañon Strait. Therma Visayas Inc., a subsidiary of Aboitiz Power, spearheaded the event. Vice president for facilities Visayas Noel Cabahug said the activity was done in collaboration with various organizations, including the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the local government units. Cabahug shared that the event, dubbed "Scubasurero and Coastal Clean Up," is in its third year for diving cleanups, although coastal cleanups are held monthly. "Our aim is to foster community responsibility for the ocean and raise environmental awareness," he said.A The initiative coincided with World Coastal Cleanup Day, celebrated on Saturday. Myca, one of the participating divers, mentioned that while she has been free diving for years, this was an opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause through her hobby. After more than two hours of cleanup, from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., the participants gathered 495 kilos of trash, with 475 kilos from the coastline and 20 kilos from underwater. The organizers reported that most of the waste consisted of household items, such as used clothing and rags, with fewer natural debris, like tree trunks.
