Stags turn back Pirates to stay unbeaten in NCAA

(UPDATE) SAN SEBASTIAN COLLEGE-RECOLETOS pulled off a comeback for the ages, wiping out a 10-point deficit in the last 1:23 to turn back Lyceum of the Philippines University, 95-93, in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 100 men's basketball tournament at the FilOil EcoOil Center on Wednesday. The Pirates seemed poised to cruise to their first win in two games after Vincent Cunanan scored a layup that put them up, 93-83, with 1:23 to go. But it's not over until it's over, and the Golden Stags proved just that with a 12-0 finishing kick, the ninth, 10th and 11th points of that rally being a Raymart Escubido 3-point play that put them up, 94-93, in the last 39.6 seconds. After a defensive stop, Lauren Cabal drew a foul and split his charities, giving Lyceum a chance to tie or win the game with a trey. Mac Guadana flubbed his triple, though, as the Golden Stags improved to 2-0 while the Pirates dropped to 0-2. Paeng Are did most of the damage in the Golden Stags' comeback with a stellar 25-point, 13-assist, eight-rebound, two-steal performance for a fitting follow-up to his 30-point season-opening explosion, which carried his team to a 91-84 win over Letran last Sunday. Escobido aided Are with 23 points, four assists and three rebounds as Tristan Felabrico amassed 14 markers and 15 boards. John Barba logged 25 points, six assists and six rebounds to pace the Pirates, but he was stretchered off the court with an apparent injury in the waning seconds of the contest. John Bravo and Guadana came through with 13 and 12 points, respectively, that went for naught. SCORES: San Sebastian 95: Are 25, Escobido 23, Felebrico 14, Velasco 12, Re. Gabat 6, Ra.
