Unemployment rate up to 4.7% in July

MANILA, Philippines — More jobless Filipinos were recorded in July with an unemployment rate of 4.7 percent from 3.1 percent in June, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported on Friday. The figure, however, is lower than the 4.9 percent recorded in the same month last year. This translates to 2.38 million jobless Filipinos, 760,000 more than June's figure of 1.62 million and July 2023's 2.29 million, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 90,000 unemployed individuals. Meanwhile, underemployment — which counts those looking for more work or an extra job — remained at 12.1 percent, unchanged from June's print but lower than the 15.9 percent in July 2023 The number of underemployment was equivalent to 5.78 million. These are people "who have expressed the desire to have additional hours of work in their present job or to have additional jobs, or to have a new job with long hours of work." Employment also recorded a decline in July, dropping 95.3 percent from 96.9 percent in June but slightly higher than the 95.1 percent in the same month last year The number of individuals with jobs reached 47.70 million, lower than June's 50.28 million but higher than July 2023's 44.56 million. The services sector continued to dominate the labor market in July in terms of the number of employed persons with a share of 60.8 percent The country's Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) in July was registered at 53.5 percent, lower than June's 66.0 percent and July 2023's 60.0 percent.
