CEBU CITY — A village chief in the city of Naga, Cebu, was arrested by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation-Central Visayas Regional Office (NBI Cevro) and the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on August 24 for allegedly falsifying documents.

Edden Gera Nocon, 42, barangay chairman of Tinaan, was arrested for presenting falsified documents, including a Deed of Absolute Sale and a Certificate Authorizing Registration (CAR).

Nocon allegedly used these fake documents to transfer a land title in Moalboal town, Cebu, under his deceased mother's name.

NBI Cevro operatives caught Nocon during a hot pursuit operation after observing suspicious activity at a "bahay kubo" (hut) on his property. A video recorded by the NBI shows the arrest in progress.

Nocon is now facing charges for violating Section 257 of the National Internal Revenue Code and for falsifying official documents under Article 173 of the Revised Penal Code. Fidel Calvan, chief revenue officer of BIR, reported that Nocon falsified an electronic CAR to facilitate the land transfer.

Earlier, Nocon's two accomplices were arrested, and their information led to the investigation and arrest of the barangay chairman.

BIR officials demonstrated how to detect fake documents using ultraviolet light, underscoring their commitment to combating fraud.

Nocon will face additional charges at the Anti-Graft Office due to his role as an elective official.

The NBI will also investigate possible accomplices in government offices. Nocon's history of similar offenses further intensifies the current charges.
