ILOILO CITY — Mayor Jerry Treñas of this city said the family of former president Rodrigo Duterte has become irrelevant in the country's political landscape.
"To a certain extent I feel that they are irrelevant," he said in a press conference on Tuesday.
Treñas made the comment in response to the Duterte family's remarks about the serving of an arrest warrant against fugitive preacher Apollo Quiboloy at his 30-hectare Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KoJC) compound in Davao City.
The former president and his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, criticized the Philippine National Police (PNP) for "abuse of power" in serving the warrant to the pastor.
The PNP deployed around 2,000 police authorities to the KoJC compound early Saturday.
"You just have to follow the law. There is a warrant of arrest that has been issued," Treñas added.
Quiboloy is wanted for human trafficking, child abuse and contempt of court.
Meanwhile, the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) is set to send reinforcements to the Police Regional Office 11 (PRO-11) in Davao City to assist in operations at the KOJC compound.
PRO-6 spokesman LtCol. Arnel Solis said that at least 100 police officers will be dispatched, coming from the Iloilo Police Provincial Office and the Iloilo City Police Office.
Solis said the deployment of the officers is currently awaiting final orders from the Philippine National Headquarters before they are sent to Davao City.
The PRO-6 previously expressed support to the ongoing enforcement operation of the PRO-11 against Quiboloy.
It cited that the law must apply to all and "not even a self-appointed, anointed son of God can exempt himself from adherence to our penal and procedural laws."
