MANILA, Philippines — The Akari Chargers survived the gutsy Galeries Tower Highrisers in a cardiac five-setter match, 23-25, 25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 18-16, in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) 2024 Reinforced Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig on Saturday.
Oly Okaro fired 32 points on 28 attacks and four blocks to lead her squad, while Ivy Lacsina added 20 points.
Grethcel Soltones came in clutch and scored 13 points, along with 14 excellent receptions, and 11 excellent digs.
In the deciding frame, the Galeries held the match-point advantage, 14-12.
But Soltones channeled all her strength and slammed back-to-back kills to equalize the match, 14-all.
Rose Baliton went for a quick to once more take the advantage, while Soltones answered with a through-the-block hit to put the match in deuce, 15-all.
Chuewulim Sutadta hammered a kill to give Galeries the advantage, but Soltones once more nailed a crosscourt hit to extend the set, 16-all.
Okaro said enough after scoring back-to-back hits to finish the match, 18-16.
"I don't think that we have an advantage, because if you are the top team everyone wants to beat you so bad, and the teams are going to give everything they have. Just because that we are in the first place it does not mean anything, these teams are going to beat us," Okaro told the press after the game.
The Chargers formalized its quarterfinals slot, holding a 6-0 win-loss card, while the Galeries remain winless (0-6)
Galeries' Sutadta scored 20 points, while Baliton and France Ronquillo both chipped in 12 points, each.
