LRT-1 operations suspended for 3 weekends in Aug

MANILA, Philippines — Operations of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) will be suspended for three weekends this month.

According to LRT-1 private operator Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), the suspension will accelerate the preparations for the LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1 opening in the fourth quarter this year.

The suspension will be implemented on Aug. 17 and 18, Aug. 24 and 25, and from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1, 2024.

LRMC said that during these periods, no commercial train service will be available from Fernando Poe Jr. Station to Baclaran Station.

It said the three-weekend closure aims to integrate the existing system of LRT-1 with the Cavite Extension in terms of signaling system, perform systems operation demonstration tests, and conduct the necessary operational exercises to ensure the safety and reliability of the extended system.

LRMC General Manager Enrico Benipayo said this system migration was a critical step in ensuring the safe and efficient operations of the extended LRT-1 line.

"We understand the inconvenience this may cause to our passengers; however, we would like to," said Benipayo.

Benipayo gave his assurance that the temporary closures would result in long-term convenience once the extended LRT-1 line becomes operational.

"We are working diligently to complete this project as safely, efficiently, and quickly as possible," he said.

Benipayo said LRMC, together with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), has coordinated with various government partners in order to support the affected commuters.
