MANILA, Philippines — The country's first Olympic gold medalist, Hidilyn Diaz, was among the first to congratulate gymnast Carlos Yulo on giving the Philippines its first gold medal in his sport.
Diaz said there were "different emotions" in Yulo's victory and thanked all the Filipino athletes.
"Yehey! May Olympic gold tayo from [Yulo]," Diaz wrote on her Instagram story.
Meanwhile, hours after his qualification to the pole vault finals, Ernest John "EJ" Obiena also congratulated Yulo on his Instagram story, with a simple "Yes, sir!".
Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino on Facebook congratulated Yulo, accompanied by photos together with the country's newest Olympic champion in the Bercy Arena in Paris.
The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) also called Yulo's gold medal win a "golden comeback" from his run in the previous Olympics in Tokyo. GAP president Cynthia Carrion was in Paris to witness Yulo's win.
"Our country's first gold medal for Men's Artistic Gymnastics was brought home by our Golden Boy, Carlos Yulo!" the GAP wrote on Facebook.
On Saturday, with a score of 15.000 points, Yulo won the country's second gold medal in Olympic history, ahead of Tokyo Olympic champion Artem Dolgopyat of Israel.
