MANILA, Philippines — First Filipina Olympic rower Joanie Delgaco will live for another day in her quest for an Olympic medal as she finished first in the repechage of the Paris 2024 Games.
The 26-year-old rower checked in at seven minutes and 55 seconds to earn a spot in the quarterfinals of the women's singles sculls 2000m event.
In the first 500m lap, Delgaco propelled and had a strong start, and timed in 1:55 minutes.
Delgaco bent her left arm and hunched her shoulders even more in the second lap as Vietnam's bet Thi Hue Pham inched closer.
After a smart tactic of Delgaco conserving her energy, Delgaco muscled and went faster to widen the gap over the trailing Vietnamese.
Pham finished second and will move to the next round of the Olympic rowing competition.
While Yariulvis Cobas Garcia, Evidelia Gonzales Jarquin, and Akoko Komlanvi finished third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
