TROPICAL Storm Carina slightly intensified and is expected to reach typhoon category on Tuesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Sunday.
Weather specialist Daniel James Villamil said that Carina was last spotted past 4 a.m. at 490 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora. It was moving at the speed 10 kilometers per hour (kph), with maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph.
Carina is forecast to move north-northwestward or northward until Tuesday.
"In general, it will remain far from the Philippine landmass and is forecast to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Wednesday or Thursday," Villamil said.
Enhanced by Carina, the southwest monsoon locally known as habagat will dump rain in Antique, Occidental Mindoro, Zambales, Bataan, Pangasinan, La Union, and Northern Palawan including Cuyo, Calamian and Kalayaan Islands, Pagasa said.
Metro Manila, Mindanao, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, the rest of Visayas and the rest of MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) will have isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
