PHILIPPINE game development studios generated over half a billion pesos in sales revenue at Europe's top game developer conference, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reported.
The country's delegation secured $9.20 million in total sales during the Nordic Game 2024 in Sweden. This is the second time for the Philippines to participate in the event, which ran from May 21 to 24.
Organized by the Department of Trade and Industry-Export Marketing Bureau (DTI-EMB) and the International Trade Center through the Arise Plus Philippines Project, the delegation underscored the country's growing game development industry.
"The significant sales achieved underscore the growing global recognition of the Philippines as a hub for game development," the department said in a statement on Tuesday.
In last year's Nordic Game, the Philippine delegation generated an initial $1.67 million in export sales.
Five Philippine developers — Arclight Lab Inc., GameOps Inc., Neun Farben, Top Peg Animation Inc. and Startrace Studios OPC — comprised this year's delegation.
"We are proud of the achievements and the strong growth that our Philippine game development industry has shown over time," Trade Undersecretary for Industry Development and Investment Promotions Group Ceferino Rodolfo said on Tuesday.
"With the support of the Arise Plus Philippines Project, we have showcased our capabilities beyond our traditional markets, making inroads in the European market," he added.
DTI-EMB Director Bianca Sykimte, meanwhile, recognized the strong support for the game development sector by the ARISE Plus Philippines Project.
"Their technical support in building the capacity of our game developers to expand to new markets has been instrumental to the sector's growth," she said.
Sylvie Cochin, Arise Plus Project Manager, highlighted that the Philippines' growing game development sector aligns with their project's goal to diversify the country's export markets in collaboration with the DTI.
Arise Plus Philippines is a four-year project that began in March 2021 and was funded by the European Union with a total cost of 5.8 million euros.
The project aims to enhance the competitiveness of Philippine exports and promote inclusive economic growth. It also provides technical assistance and capacity-building to various sectors, including the game development industry, to help them access new markets and achieve sustainable development.
