5-year-old girl dies from jellyfish sting in Subic

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — A five-year-old girl died after she was stung by a jellyfish while swimming at a beach resort here on Friday.

Jahaziel Michaellie Maningdin said she and her daughter Kiera were playing in the shallow waters of the All Hands Beach Subic when they were stung by jellyfish.

Maningdin said that she immediately lifted her daughter from the water and saw the tentacles of the jellyfish still attached to the child.

She said she shouted for help and a person approached them and poured vinegar on the area where they were stung.

Maningding also said the resort did not have an emergency vehicle to bring them to a medical facility right away.

"During that time, Kiera became unconscious after being poured with vinegar. She regained her consciousness during the drive to the hospital," she said.

She said one of the guests of the resort, a pregnant woman, brought them to the Allied Care Experts Medical Center-Baypoint Hospital located inside the Subic Bay Freeport.

"When we arrived at the emergency room, she was conscious and in pain. My child needed emergency monitoring as she had low oxygen levels and was holding her breath. I was dissatisfied with how they handled the emergency situation," Maningding said.

A resort staff accompanied them to the hospital.

At the hospital, Maningding said, the health workers "seemed unsure of what they are doing."

"They first gave my child an IV (intravenous) shot but did not monitor her oxygen levels. She was in critical condition, yet the staff kept leaving us alone," she said.

"We were asking the staff if we could give water to Kiera since she was thirsty, but none of them gave an answer if she could drink water," she said.

Kiera then vomited which probably alarmed the medical personnel in the hospital, she said.

"Afterwards, we heard that she needed to be suctioned. They told us to leave and intubated her," she said.

According to a report, this is not the first time a jellyfish incident has been recorded at the resort.

Maningding's only lament, she said, is that the resort was not prepared to respond to such a life-threatening emergency.
