Garcia to invite Rama to Palaro opening rites

CEBU CITY — Acting Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia said he will invite suspended Mayor Michael Rama to attend the 2024 Palarong Pambansa opening ceremony on July 9, recognizing the latter's contributions for the city's hosting of the annual games for elementary and secondary students.

In a press conference on Monday, Garcia said that despite Rama's suspension, his role in the event's preparations warrants his presence.

"Mayor Rama was actively engaged in the preparations even before his suspension," Garcia said. "His dedication is undeniable, and it is fitting to invite him."

Last week, Rama invited the media for a press conference and expressed his opinion about the ongoing preparations for the national sporting event.

He talked about "giving credit where credit is due," saying he had contributed significantly in bringing the Palarong Pambansa to Cebu City. He also said that it was his efforts, not of other politicians, that secured the city's hosting of this year's games.

Rama also said that he will attend the opening ceremony with or without an invitation from Garcia or other government officials.

Rama, along with seven other officials, is serving a six-month preventive suspension by the Office of the Ombudsman. The eight officials were suspended beginning May 8, following a complaint filed by city hall employees who alleged they had not been paid for 10 months.

Garcia, meanwhile, said that sending an invitation to Rama reflects the city's commitment to unity and cooperation in celebrating Filipino sportsmanship. He noted that while the Department of Education formally sends invitations, the city government of Cebu also plans to extend a personal invitation to Rama.

"We will send Mayor Rama an invitation. It is a public event, and his participation is valued," Garcia said, adding that they "recognize his contributions and hope he can join us."

The Palarong Pambansa holds significant importance for Cebu City as its host.

Garcia announced last week that the city is ready for the event, noting that infrastructure and logistics have been fully addressed.

"We are almost 100 percent prepared. The infrastructure is ready, and we are now focusing on finalizing the lineup of performers," Garcia said.

The Palarong Pambansa is a major annual sporting event in the Philippines that brings together student-athletes to compete in various sports.

Cebu City will be hosting the games for the first time in 30 years. It will take place from July 6 to July 17, with the opening ceremony scheduled for July 9 at Cebu City Sports Center.
