2 Philippine eagles released on Leyte Island

BURAUEN, Leyte — Two Philippine Eagles (Pithecophaga jefferyi), named Uswag and Carlito, were released Friday in the forests of Kagbana village in Burauen, Leyte. The eagles' transfer is part of the Philippine Eagle Foundation's (PEF) conservation efforts."Leyte Island will have wild Philippine Eagles again soon," the PEF said in a social media post.Carlito and Uswag's release was a reintroduction of the species into the area, where eagle sightings have gone down since Super Typhoon "Yolanda" (Haiyan) devastated the island in 2013.Carlito is a 6-year-old female eagle rescued in the mountains of Agusan del Sur, while Uswag is a 3-year-old eagle discovered at Mount Apo.Both eagles were recovered from the wild after being injured by airguns. They were rehabilitated at the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos, Davao City, before being transported here on June 11.Conservation translocation is the process of relocating eagles from one island to another in order to preserve extinction-prone species, such as the Philippine Eagle. The movements of the two released eagles are tracked using global positioning system transmitters. The Philippine Eagle is among the world's rarest eagles, as well as one of the largest and most powerful. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has also categorized them as critically endangered, with just 400 pairs estimated to remain in the wild.
