Globe joins GSM group's Open Gateway initiative

GLOBE Telecom Inc. has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with international industry organization GSM Association (GSMA) to improve the delivery of mobile services across networks worldwide.

The partnership allows Globe access to the GSMA Open Gateway, a common and open applications programming interface (API) framework developed by the organization.

The Open Gateway will make it easier for developers and cloud providers to build safer apps and services that will seamlessly communicate with each other and work for all devices and clients and customers, the telco said on Sunday.

"Today marks a milestone for Globe as we embrace the GSMA Open Gateway initiative, teaming up with 40 mobile network operators to develop mobile network open APIs," Globe President and CEO Globe Ernest Cu said during the signing of the MoU with the GSMA.

"This groundbreaking effort allows real-time access and interconnection with the Globe network via open global APIs, opening up numerous opportunities for delivering more value to our customers and generating new revenue streams," he added.

Globe said it recognized the possibilities of using the common APIs in sectors including eHealth, agritech, emergency services, carbon accounting, Internet of Things (IoT), education, entertainment, e-commerce and transportation, among others.

Access to the open APIs will greatly help these sectors reach new milestones, the telco added.

"Leveraging open APIs across various sectors will help us significantly scale our ICT portfolio, even as we pursue our mission to solve our customers' pain points at scale. Enabling seamless integration and innovation will significantly help API development and improve user experiences," Cu said.

Globe shares closed down P65, or 3.26 percent, at P1,928 each on Friday.
