Arellano clinches 5th straight NCAA cheerleading title

ARELLANO University completed a rare fifth straight championship in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 99 Cheerleading Competition at the Filoil EcoOil Center in San Juan City on Wednesday.

The Legarda-based squad showed impressive moves, stunts and routines to earn 253.5 points from the judges. The team also took home a cash prize of P100,000.

It was Arellano's sixth crown in the last seven NCAA seasons.

It also cut into what once appeared to be an unbeatable nine titles by the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) Altas Perps Squad, which last reigned supreme nine years ago.

UPHSD finished as the runner-up for the fifth straight time to AU with 231.5 points.

Letran placed third for the second straight year with 206 points and dedicated the podium finish to its coach Arnold Villanueva who died last February.

The Altas Perps Squad pocketed P75,000 while the Letran Cheering Squad took home P50,000.

Meanwhile, Season 99 host Jose Rizal University, represented by Management Committee Chairman Paul Supan, passed the hosting rights to Lyceum of the Philippines through Hercules Callanta.

Callanta said Season 100 has been tentatively set to begin on August 17.
