THE National Privacy Commission (NPC) on Tuesday said it had received notification of a data breach from Maxicare Healthcare Corp.

Maxicare was said to have notified its members regarding a potential data breach — first detected on June 13 — that could compromise personal data and medical information.

The company said that unauthorized persons may have gained access to personal information submitted to Lab@Home, a third-party provider that can be used by Maxicare members to get laboratory requests.

"Lab@Home maintains a separate database for this process, and Lab@Home's systems are not integrated with that of Maxicare," the company said, adding that it was investigating the scope and extent of the breach.

The NPC, meanwhile, said that it was actively monitoring the situation.

It also encouraged data subjects who believe they may be part of any breach to contact the data protection officers of the companies involved and report the same to the NPC.

Earlier this month, the NPC said that real estate firm Robinsons Land and Toyota Motor Philippines had also notified them of data breaches.

Last month, the Philippine National Police (PNP) also reported six data breach notifications.

Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Security Network has said that the Philippines ranks fourth globally among countries most targeted by web threats in 2023 and was first in Southeast Asia.

Latest PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group data showed that a total of 4,469 cybercrime incidents were logged from January to March 2024, a 21.84-percent increase from the 3,668 incidents in the fourth quarter of 2023.
