MANILA, Philippines — Former Filipino Olympian, comedian and politician Rosalio "Yoyong" Martires passed away on Tuesday as announced by his family.
The Pinoy basketball great was 77.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Rosalio "Yoyong" D. Martires," the family announced on social media.
"He has peacefully joined our Creator yesterday, June 18, 2024. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones during this difficult time. He lived a very adventurous and colorful life. A loving husband, a doting father, a caring grandpa, a self-made man, an Olympian, a prolific basketball player, a comedian, a devoted public servant, and a child of Christ. Difficult steps to follow, indeed. You served God, our country, and your fellow men. Rest in Peace, papa. We love you!"
Born in Catbalogan, Samar, Martires played for the Southwestern University in Cebu and later, was recruited by San Miguel coach Ning Ramos, en route to building his basketball career in Manila.
His basketball resume as a national player includes winning the ABC Under-18 (now FIBA Under-18 Asia Cup) gold medal in 1970, along with being part of the 1973 Philippine men's team that captured the cage championship in Manila, beating Korea en route to a tournament sweep.
Highlighting his basketball career was being part of the Philippine men's squad that played in the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany.
Martires also saw action for the San Miguel/Royal Tru-Orange franchise during the MICAA days, starting in 1972 and joined the ballclub as it became part of the pioneer squad in the PBA in 1975. His PBA career saw him win two championships, one with Royal Tru-Orange under coach Ed Ocampo in 1979, and in 1982 with San Miguel Beer under coach Tommy Manotoc. He closed his PBA career in 1984 after playing for Country Fair.
He compiled a total of 753 steals, making him ninth in the all-time steals list in the PBA.
Martires later, ventured into acting, appearing in movies alongside Tito, Vic and Joey, before entering politics, serving as vice mayor and councilor.
