Instead of a cigarette break, try doing 4-7-8

INSTEAD of a smoking break to relieve stress, Filipinos should adopt the 4-7-8 breathing technique, the Department of Health (DoH) suggested.

This involves inhaling for four seconds, holding the breath for seven seconds and exhaling for eight seconds, a technique that has been shown in various studies to effectively calm the body by activating the parasympathetic nervous system.

"A smoking break is not the answer to exhaustion and stress," the DoH said in Filipino in a Facebook post. "Maybe you just need to breathe."

Nicotine from smoking creates a sense of relaxation, but this relief is short-lived and can lead to withdrawal symptoms and increased cravings. This cycle may ultimately contribute to more serious health issues, the Mental Health Foundation said.

By promoting the 4-7-8 technique, the DoH aims to encourage healthier coping mechanisms for stress and fatigue, ensuring long-term well-being among the population. This initiative underscores the importance of adopting sustainable practices supporting physical and mental health.
