PH sprinters bag 2 gold medals in Thailand

FILIPINO sprinters Frederick Ramirez and Bernalyn Bejoy seized gold medals in their respective divisions at the Thailand Open Track and Field Championships in Pathum Thani.

Ramirez ruled the men's 400 m as he posted his season best and a competition record of 46.58 seconds.

Ramirez's teammate and compatriot Michael del Prado finished second and claimed the silver medal with his time of 46.82 seconds.

Muhammad Ramdhan of Indonesia settled for the bronze medal with 47.43 seconds.

Meanwhile, Bejoy topped the women's 800 m class after submitting a time of 2:13.31 seconds.

Bejoy bested home bets Ruedee Netthai (2:17.30) and Chanapa Boonitsarasaree (2:18.24), who bagged silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Ramirez and Bejoy became the second and third Filipino gold medalists in the competition after Janry Ubas in the men's long jump.

Ubas captured the championship after leaping a length of 7.51 meters in the 19-man field competition.

The 30-year-old bested Taiwanese Wen Hua-Yu (7.41 m) and Hong Kong's Wong Pak Hang (7.37 m), who settled for the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Meanwhile, Leonard Grospe reset his personal and national record by leaping 2.21 meters in the men's high jump, earning him a silver medal.

Grospe bested the previous Philippine best of 2.20 m that he himself established at the Philippine National Games in December to clinch a silver medal.

He finished behind gold winner Taiwanese Ye Po-Ting (2.25 m) and ahead of bronze medalist Thai Chatchai Nil (2.07 m).
