Luzon grid placed under yellow alert

(UPDATE) The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) on Monday placed the Luzon grid on yellow alert because of forced outages of several power plants and higher power demand.

The grid was on yellow alert from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The Visayas and Mindanao grids were operating at normal capacity, the NGCP said.

A yellow alert is issued when the power reserves dip to a critical level.

The NGCP said two plants have been on forced outages since 2023, two others between January and March 2024, and 12 between April and May 2024.

Six power plants are running on reduced capacities, leaving the grid with a deficit of 2,692.8 megawatts (MW).

On Monday, the grid's capacity was at 14,457 MW, while peak demand was at 13,484 MW.
