Weather expert: Intense heat to continue in Cebu

CEBU CITY — Despite the onset of the rainy season in the country, Cebu is expected to experience intense heat.

Weather expert Jhomer Eclarino of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Visayas said that hot weather will continue to prevail in the province during the week.

Eclarino added there is a possibility the heat index could reach 42 to 54 degrees Celsius.

Last Wednesday, Pagasa announced the start of the rainy season in the Philippines, which could bring "above-normal" rainfall in some areas in the country.

Eclarino also said that Cebu logged its record-high heat index at 43 degrees Celsius last Monday.

Meanwhile, Eclarino said there is a low chance of isolated rain showers.

Eclarino advised continued adherence to safe and health protocols against extreme heat.

Earlier, Dr. Eugenia Mercedes Cañal, Department of Health Central Visayas regional epidemiologist, advised the public to avoid going outdoors between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. due to the peak heat index during these hours.

She also recommended wearing sunscreen when outside, and stressed the importance of staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
