MANILA, Philippines — Despite a short time of preparation, Alas Pilipinas lived up to the hype and conquered greater heights after qualifying for the semifinals and finishing the preliminaries unblemished (4-0) in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) 2024 Challenge Cup.
With Alas Pilipinas securing the country's first-ever semis entry in AVC, head coach Jorge Souza de Brito shared how proud he is to be part of the historic run in Philippine women's volleyball.
"What happened is...it is a magical and a moment for all the Filipino environment volleyball. I am really proud of the players. Right now, 19 years we did not get into the semifinals, we [look] to go for any medal. But we go for the gold. I am very proud of them, and I am so happy to be part of this right now," Souza de Brito told the press.
The Philippines dominated Taiwan through a 25-18, 25-17, 25-18 sweep last Sunday, May 26, at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum to punctuate the elimination round with an exclamation point.
But the job is not finished for the Alas Pilipinas squad as they will face the world 33rd Kazakhstan in their first match in the semis.
"Yes, We already strategized against Kazakhstan. Since yesterday we already put up [on] what should we do. The guys are already aware of that, now we just have to put it into action."Now that they are gunning to be in the Finals, the head coach answered simply, and believes that there is so much more to improve. "Yes, we have much more [to improve]," Souza de Brito said, hinting that there are more tricks up to his sleeves.
