A FILIPINA graduated summa cum laude from the University of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Sophia Nicole Jerez earned her Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Communication Engineering at the University of Dubai on May 7, according to a report by the Global Filipino Magazine on Wednesday.
"I began my bachelor's degree during the pandemic, a period of significant adjustment to an online setup. Despite these challenges, my academic journey was beautifully orchestrated by the author of life, the Lord Jesus Christ," Jerez told the Dubai-based Filipino community publication. "My journey is rooted in faith and prayers. I clung to the great promises of God and walked by faith, supported by actions in alignment with my prayers."
Before moving to the University of Dubai, Jerez said her significant challenge was the closure of her previous campus, the Al Ghurair University, where she majored in computer science and engineering.
Al Ghurair, a private university, closed permanently in August 2022 after 23 years in operation.
"A major challenge I faced was when my previous university announced its sudden closure," Jerez explained. "This required transferring to a new university, which felt like starting over. But during this uncertainty, the Lord reassured me, turning what seemed like a setback into a stepping stone to greater opportunities at the University of Dubai."
In her graduation message, Jerez told her fellow graduates to put God first and trust His plan.
"Committing everything to the Lord leads to a triumphant journey. Showing compassion, integrity, and humility is just as important as academic excellence," she said. "The quality of the community around you significantly impacts who you become. Also, balancing hard work with self-care, including proper diet and sleep, is essential."
"With God, all things are possible. You are designed for greatness and success. It's important to embrace this belief and step confidently into the great future God has planned for you," Jerez added.
The new graduate and valedictorian said she aims to contribute to the development of the Philippines, the UAE and the broader world.
"Professionally, I want to showcase the excellent workmanship Filipinos can offer," she said.
Around 450,000 Filipinos call Dubai home, representing 21.3 percent of the city emirate's population.
