CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Mayor Rolando Uy went to Barangay Gusa and Agusan to officiate back-to-back mass weddings to 136 couples on Saturday, May 11.
The "Kasalan ng Bayan" (People's Wedding) is a weekly project of the mayor's office that also aims to deliver other basic services to the masses.
"I personally encouraged unwed couples to formally tie knots in order to create stronger family ties," Uy said.
The mayor first officiated the ceremony for 22 couples at the Barangay Gusa covered court before proceeding to Barangay Agusan, where he married 114 more couples.
Each couple received one "lechon" (roasted pig), a grocery pack and 5 kilograms of rice from the mayor.
Among the other services the local government has brought to the barangay include a medical checkup with free medicines, registration of unregistered children, legal counselling and nutritional feeding for children.
Since he was elected as mayor in 2022, Uy has sponsored the wedding of more than 2,000 couples in the city.
