MANILA, Philippines: Outside hitter Jonna Perdido looks to turn her offensive game up a notch or even higher in the potential absence of UST main gunner Angge Poyos in Game Two of the UAAP Season 86 women's volleyball Finals on Wednesday, May 15 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Poyos twisted her right ankle in the second set of Game One at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, May 11. The score was tied at 11 when the MVP contender got injured and was assisted to the UST bench.
Poyos, who had to use a walking boot and crutches, did not return as the Golden Tigresses absorbed a 23-25, 20-25, 20-25 defeat from the NU Lady Bulldogs.
"For me, I need to step up and contribute because Angge got injured. But there are a lot of players who could still play. Just because Angge could not play, it doesn't mean it's over for us," said Perdido.
"There are a lot of us who will step up. I know that I'm going to bounce back, that we're going to bounce back. We're going to use Angge as motivation and we're going to fight."
Perdido took over for UST when Angge got hurt as she finished with 17 points laced with nine excellent receptions.
"I'm saddened with what happened to Angge. I just reminded myself that I need to step up and contribute because the team needs me. We just fell short but I know we'll bounce back."
Perdido said that the Golden Tigresses have what it takes to push this series to a decider. They just have to believe that they can.
"Yes, our confidence is still there. We worked for this and we just need to persevere in training. We just need to work and believe in each other, ourselves, and our coaches. This game (Game One) will be our motivation in bouncing back in Game Two. I know we're really going to bounce back."
Regina Jurado and Xyza Gula are also expected to step up in Game Two.
