First storm this year to be named 'Aghon'

MANILA, Philippines: The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Thursday that the first storm in 2024 will likely form or enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) early next week.

It will be named Aghon.

Cloud clusters were sighted outside PAR which could develop into a low pressure area (LPA) and enter the country as a storm, weather specialist Rhea Torres said.

"Its trough would probably affect areas in Mindanao," Torres said.

Meantime, most parts of the country will be hot due to the easterlies – winds coming from the east that pass through the Pacific Ocean and carry humid, warm weather.

There will be isolated downpours or thunderstorms in some areas especially in the late afternoon or at night due to the combined effects of the easterly winds and the localized thunderstorm.

The frontal system will bring overcast skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms in Batanes and Cagayan, Pagasa said.

A frontal system or surface is defined as a transition boundary separating two air masses of contracting properties like temperature and humidity.
