Stunts, romance and karaoke

"The Fall Guy" was a popular TV series back in the '80s. The ABC show ran for five seasons from 1981 to 1986 and starred Lee Majors who was best known as "The Six Million Dollar Man." This was back when people would still be watching the same shows.

Even if this is a 2024 version of "The Fall Guy," I think the audience that would love and appreciate it best would still be the ones who grew up in the '80s as the movie almost runs like a sleek, high budget episode.

The original premise has a Hollywood stuntman moonlight as a bounty hunter catching bad guys.

There's also the show's theme song that became popular back in the day that went, "I might jump an open drawbridge or Tarzan from a vine, 'cause I'm the unknown stuntman that makes Eastwood look so fine."

The Philippine audience would love it too because it has expertly blended together the key ingredients of romance, action and comedy.

The plot is nothing too complicated. The last thing we need to do right now anyway is to short circuit, while we're trying to beat the hotter than a fever heat inside an air-conditioned cinema.

Oh, and did I mention there's a karaoke scene?

Stuntman Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) needs to clear his name and win back the love of his life, director Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt) and to do this, he needs to rely on his wits, his training and his crew.

Expect lots of stunts, fight scenes aka "bakbakan" and chase scenes. Also expect cute and funny romantic exchanges, a bad guy who is a real asshole and lots of Easter Eggs for fans.

I can't write this column without acknowledging my friend, Los Angeles-based comic book creator and events organizer, Mike Wellman. He's been talking about "The Fall Guy" constantly. He predicts a hit.

Here's a piece of trivia he shared (which I have not yet found anywhere online) — Jody and Colt work together on a film called "Metal Storm" with the tag line, "It's High Noon at the End of the Universe." There is actually a 1983 "Metalstorm" film! Wellman said his son "suffered" through it but it would give him context for when they go see "The Fall Guy" together.

All in all, "The Fall Guy" is an old-fashioned crowd pleaser. Now to wait and see how it does kicking off the summer box office season in the US which will include "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," "Furiosa," and "Deadpool and Wolverine."
