THE New Era University (NEU) in Quezon City held a collaborative meeting with the Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX), Data Lake Inc. (DLI) and Ignition Venture Studio (IVS) at the NEU Library on April 22, 2024, according to University Secretary Erwin Daniel Briones.
NEU President Alberto Domingo Jr. led in welcoming the visitors, together with NEU Board of Trustees member Edmario Reyes, NEU Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research Julian Meimban 3rd., Briones and other university officials.
The visiting executives include SpaceX Paul Del Vecchio, DLI President and COO Operating Officer David Almeda Tanael and IVS founder Juan Paolo Villonco.
The exploratory talk aimed at raising awareness of the human space flight program among the NEU populace, especially the faculty members and students from the NEU Department of Astronomy.
Another purpose of the collaborative meeting was to organize a group that will write and eventually establish the Law of Space.
NEU is a private educational institution in the Philippines, run by the Iglesia Ni Cristo but it is a non-sectarian university. The main campus is located within the Central Office Complex of the Iglesia Ni Cristo.
One of its many curricular offerings is the Bachelor of Science in Astronomy.
On one hand, SpaceX is the first private company to develop a liquid-propellant rocket that has reached orbit; to launch, orbit, and recover a spacecraft; to send a spacecraft and astronauts to the International Space Station. It is also the first organization of any type to achieve a vertical propulsive landing of an orbital rocket booster and the first to reuse such a booster.
On the other, DLI is a Philippine-based data company that focuses on bridging the digital divide. Its mission involves ensuring equitable access to internet connectivity, facilitating seamless data exchange through robust infrastructure, and leveraging advanced data processing techniques to drive innovation, socioeconomic development, and inclusive growth. It works with companies and government organizations to narrow the gap in digital access and skills.
Accordingly, SpaceX has partnered with DLI to offer satellite broadband service in the country. The move aimed at addressing the challenges posed by the Philippines' unique geography, which includes more than 7,600 islands with isolated and mountainous terrain. As a result, broadband coverage has been difficult for companies.
Meanwhile, IVS is currently playing a significant role in shaping the future of business in the Philippines and beyond. It focuses on innovation, regulation, and fostering talent that positions the company as a key player in the global landscape.
