Spartans pull off masterful win vs Tamaraws in PCAP

MANILA, Philippines: The Dasma Cavite Spartans scored an impressive 16.5-4.5 victory against Mindoro Tamaraws in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) All-Filipino Conference on Saturday, April 13, using the Chess.com platform.

Gunning for another playoffs berth in the country's premier chess league, Dasma Cavite demolished Mindoro in the blitz category, 6.5-0.5, with wins from Kevin Arquero, Fide Master Carlos Edgardo Garma, Melizah Ruth Carreon, Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., National Master Carlo Magno Rosaupan and Alfredo Rapanot.

Arquero bested Ryan Agbunag on Board 1, Garma toppled Richard Allen Sicangco on Board 2, Carreon crushed Cylliz Kaessa Merilles on Board 3, Antonio subdued Cesar Cunanan on Board 4, Rosaupan defeated Jeffrey Pascua on Board 5 and Rapanot tripped Alvin dela Cruz on Board 7. Mindoro's only score came when Ronald Berdera forced a draw against the Dasma Cavite's Kevin Mirano on Board 6.

The Spartans continued its mastery over the Tamaraws in rapid play with a 10-4 win as Arquero, Garma, Antonio, Rosaupan, and Rapanot scored two points each against respective foes.

"It was a big win for us," said Spartans coach Benjie Bercadez.

Dasma Cavite, however, faltered against Davao Chess Eagles, 9-12, in the other match-up on Saturday.

The setback dropped Dasma Cavite to second place in the Northern Conference with 152 points and a 8-2 win-loss record.

The San Juan Predators remained on top with a 9-1 slate and 147.5 points after scoring back-to-back wins against Iloilo Kisela Knights, 15-5-5.5, and Mindoro Tamaraws, 20-1.

At third place is Manila with an 8-2 card and 145.5 points, followed by Pasig City, also 8-2 but with only 143 points in this 18-team, 2-division league.

Toledo, meanwhile, bounced back with a 16.5-4.5 victory over Olongapo to stay on top in the Southern division.

Toledo has an 8-2 record, tied with Camarines but has accumulated 141 points compared to the 130 points of the Soaring Eagles.
