LINGAYEN, Pangasinan: The number of suspected rabies cases in the Ilocos Region had doubled during the first three months of the year compared to the number of cases on the same period last year, the Department of Health (DoH) Ilocos Region said on Wednesday, April 3.
In a statement, the DoH's Regional Epidemiological Surveillance Unit said that six suspected rabies cases were reported from January 1 to March 9 this year, which is 100 percent higher than the three cases reported in the same period in 2023.
Rabies is a vaccine-preventable, zoonotic, viral disease affecting the central nervous system. Once clinical symptoms appear, death ensues.
The most number of rabies cases were in Pangasinan province, which recorded three cases. La Union has two cases and Ilocos Norte province has one.
"Rabies continues to be a problem in the country. This is why it is important that we help each other to strengthen our anti-rabies program," said Paula Paz Sydiongco, DoH regional director.
Sydiongco said local government units could help by encouraging pet owners to have their dogs and cats vaccinated.
She said that the increase in the number of rabies cases presents an opportunity for pet owners to renew their commitment to responsible pet ownership, not only to safeguard the well-being of their pets but also the health and safety of their families and the communities.
The Health department has intensified its rabies awareness program by raising public consciousness on the dangers of the virus.
Sydiongco said the DoH continues to conduct activities to promote responsible pet ownership.
She also reminded the public to seek immediate medical attention when bitten by an animal.
Last month, the DoH regional office conducted a Rabies Awareness Month Celebration in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, to provide awareness on the dangers of rabies.
