PRESIDENTIAL Adviser for Poverty Alleviation Secretary Lorenzo "Larry" Gadon said on Monday that he would submit a proposal to the Senate to review the possible amendments in the Charter's political provisions to include term extensions for mayors, governors and congressmen.
Presidential Adviser for Poverty Alleviation Lorenzo "Larry" Gadon. File PhotoGadon, in a Viber interview with The Manila Times, said it would be practical if the amendments would also include the political provisions, but it should only involve the term extension of local chief executives.
"Since our honorable lawmakers are now agreeing to Charter change, why not consider reviewing amendments on political provisions of the 1987 Philippine Constitution?" he said.
"This would also include the term extension not only for city and municipal mayors but for governors and congressmen as well from the current three years to six years," Gadon added, noting that this would put them on par with senators, who are elected to six-year terms.
Gadon said the current setup wastes the people's money because elections are held every three years.
Instead of being reelected every three years for a total of three reelections or nine years, the local government executives may be given a chance for just one reelection after the first six-year term, he suggested.
The first three-year term for a local executive is too short as this would only be spent familiarizing himself for the elective post.
Gadon said his proposal would improve not only the political system but also the lives of many poor Filipinos.
