MANILA, Philippines: Olympic silver medalist Nesthy Petecio is advancing to the quarterfinals at the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers in Busto Arsizio, Italy on Friday (Saturday in Manila).
At the Round of 16 of the women's 57-kilogram division, Petecio defeated Nancy Canan Tas of Germany via unanimous decision.
Petecio's quarterfinals opponent is yet to be named, as of this writing.
Meanwhile, in the men's 57 kg division, Olympic silver medalist Carlo Paalam prevailed over Mexico's Andrey Bonilla in the Round of 32 via split decision (3-1), advancing to the Round of 16.
Paalam had also shared a few seconds of his bout in his Facebook and Instagram stories, criticizing his Mexican foe for simply having "not good boxing", as Bonilla was seen trying to flip down the Filipino boxer.
In the women's 50 kg Round of 32, Aira Villegas won over Canada's McKenzie Wright via split decision (3-2).
She will advance to the Round of 16, with a yet-to-be determined opponent, as of this writing.
The three boxers, along with Asian Games silver medalist Rogen Ladon, are the only ones remaining in Italy in the Olympic qualifiers for the upcoming Paris Games.
