June Mar Fajardo doubtful for FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers

MANILA, Philippines: PBA seven-time Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo could possibly miss the first window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers 2025 due to a partial tear on his left calf, which he sustained during Game 4 of the just-concluded PBA Commissioner's Cup won by San Miguel Beer.

The Beermen's team physiotherapist Edward Bacason said the 6-foot-10 Fajardo played hurt during Games 5 and 6, but managed to contribute enough route to helping SMB score a 4-2 title series win against Magnolia and capture the franchise's 29th league title in all.

"June Mar has partial tear on the soleus muscle (of his left calf)," Bacason told the Manila Times.

The soleus muscle is a powerful muscle located at the back part of the lower leg, and functions largely when walking or standing.

Gilas coach Tim Cone admitted that Fajardo's "doubtful" to play.

"He is planning to attend the trip but is doubtful to play," Cone said.

Gilas is set to leave Manila early next week to kick off the qualifiers by facing off Hong Kong on February 22, before returning to Manila to host Chinese Taipei on February 25.

Fajardo, if ever, will be the second casualty to injury after AJ Edu, whose spot, Cone said will be taken by Ginebra veteran big man Japeth Aguilar.

For the moment, Cone shared there are "no plans to take in another player" in lieu of Fajardo.

Gilas is currently in a closed-door training camp at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna.

The team will be back in Manila and will be holding practice at the Philsports Arena next Monday, February 19 that will be open to public.
