Go calls out DSWD for aid release delay

SEN. Christopher "Bong" Go expressed dismay over the delayed release of assistance for individuals in crisis situations by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The senator issued the statement amid allegations that some government programs were being used to woo supporters for the signature campaign for the people's initiative for Charter change.

"In the past hearings, it came out that government programs were allegedly used in exchange for the signature campaign to push people's initiative. It seems that government programs are being utilized for politics," Go said.

He cited the promise made by DSWD Secretary Rexlon Gatchalian during a budget hearing in September last year assuring prompt payouts for validated lists of qualified beneficiaries.

In a Senate hearing, a video was played showing Malabon Vice Mayor Bernard "Ninong" de la Cruz narrating that DSWD's aid to the city's indigents was delayed. He added there was no action or response from the agency on the matter, contrary to its claims that validation is ongoing.

Go said the DSWD needs transparency, noting that legislators have oversight functions to ensure the funds intended for the poor are used properly and efficiently.

"Fulfill your promise to this Chamber. That is on record, that is your promise in the past hearings, and deliver your commitment to the Filipino people. Give those who are qualified the assistance they deserve," he said.

Go urged the DSWD to make public the status of aid distributions for transparency.
