2GO, NU tie up for internship program

2GO Group Inc., SM Investment Corp.'s logistics unit, has inked a three-year partnership with National University (NU) to provide maritime internships for tourism and hospitality students.

Under the program, students will have a chance to work on 2GO vessels and gain firsthand experience during a seven-day voyage, 2GO said on Thursday.

"In the SM group, we understand the importance of being able to move people and goods safely and conveniently and how domestic tourism contributes to inclusive economic growth," 2GO President and CEO Frederic DyBuncio said.

"This collaboration with academic institutions like NU will prepare and encourage more competent people to join the travel and logistics sectors," he added.

Sharon Musngi-Ngo, 2GO business unit head for Sea Solutions, said the company's collaboration with NU would help students undergo a "smooth transition into the professional world."

The on-board learning program started last month and will run until January 2027, the SM unit said, adding that interns will undergo mentorship and guidance from training instructors and industry experts.

"This initiative serves as a pivotal bridge for [NU's] graduating class, seamlessly connecting theoretical knowledge with practical insights into the dynamic service industry," 2GO said.

NU President Renato Carlos Ermita, for his part, said the university remained committed to offering "top-notch educational opportunities, and [2GO's] internship program will enhance our students' knowledge, experience, and employability upon graduation."

Shares of 2GO parent SM Investments Corp. climbed by P5 to P915 each on Thursday.
