ALBAY 2nd District Rep. Jose Ma. Clemente "Joey" Salceda on Wednesday said that the required number of signatures to allow Charter change (Cha-cha) through a people's initiative has been reached. The 1987 Constitution permits citizens to propose amendments to the charter by means of a petition of at least 12 percent of registered voters, of which every legislative district is represented by a minimum of 3 percent of registered voters therein. Salceda said in a radio interview that the number of signatures has reached 12.1 percent.

Filipino-born IDF soldier killed in Gaza

THE Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv and the Israeli Embassy in Manila confirmed the death of Cydrick Garin, a Filipino reservist in the Israel Defense Forces, during a massive explosion in Gaza on January 22. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, The Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv wrote that Garin was born to Filipino parents — his father hails from General Santos City and his mother from Isabela province. Garin's mother resides in Tel Aviv while his father is preparing to travel to Israel.

I have no plans of resigning — Duterte

VICE President Sara Duterte said she has no intention of resigning from her posts as vice president and Education secretary, adding she has not discussed with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. her plans for the next election. Duterte attributed misinformation about her political plans to people removing parts of her speech to make them out of context. In a TV interview on Tuesday, Marcos said that Duterte is "testing the waters" to gauge possible public reaction if she will run for public office in 2025. The vice president said in her speech in Davao City that she has started campaigning in their stronghold since her brothers, Davao City 1st District Rep. Paolo Duterte and Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte, announced they were not inclined to run for any position.

Quiboloy to Hontiveros: File charges in court

PASTOR Apollo Quiboloy, founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KoJC), challenged Sen. Ana Theresia "Risa" Hontiveros to file charges against him in court instead of engaging in a smear campaign to destroy his reputation. during a Senate inquiry.

BUSINESS: 'No plans' for new taxes – Recto

Topping business, new taxes are not on the new Finance secretary's agenda and the government will instead focus on improving revenue collections to help fund its spending needs. Tax proposals pushed by his predecessor, Benjamin Diokno, will still be pursued but several have to be reviewed and amended with a view to making rates "fairer" and easier to collect. Some of the tax measures that the Finance department wants Congress to pass are the Real Property Valuation and Assessment Reform measure, a value-added tax (VAT) on digital service providers, a VAT refund for non-resident tourists, and the proposed Passive Income and Financial Intermediaries Taxation Act.

SPORTS: Yulo is truly 'world-class' – trainer

Over to sports, Carlos Yulo's sports physiotherapist, and strength and conditioning coach Hazel Calawod said the Olympian gymnast is world class. In an interview with The Manila Times, Calawod, a nine-year veteran in her field of work, said that what makes the Paris Olympics-bound Yulo a world-class athlete is his humility and that he listens very well to what he's been told to do.
