DoE studying use of AI

THE Department of Energy (DoE), specifically the Energy Utilization Management Bureau (EUMB), is studying the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in some of its operations.

In an interview with reporters on Monday night, DoE-EUMB Director Patrick Aquino said they had some discussions with a company in Japan for an AI application to detect possible grid interruptions and prevent such."A Japanese firm is offering their AI capabilities to us, and they have at least 21 patents on this," he said."Moreover, the AI program can process several kinds of data. Whether it's related to outages, or whether it's on making sure the size of transmission of energy storage, it can do it all, but it will require some historical data, and the system will need to run for around two weeks," Aquino added. He will share the possible use of the AI technology with Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to prevent events like the recent Panay island grid blackout."When I go back [to the Philippines], I will share this not only to the Secretary, but also the ERC, which will also be a good recipient of that because they put in all of the data required for certain areas [in the Philippines] and let the program run, it will be able to identify possible problems and help us prevent power interruptions," Aquino said.To recall, power was out across the islands of Panay, Guimaras and Negros on January 2 due to the tripping of multiple power plants that isolated the three islands from the rest of the Visayas grid.
