Quiambao sizzles as SGA goes 2-0

UNIVERSITY Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 86 Most Valuable Player Kevin Quiambao shot a perfect 6-of-6 from three-point territory as Strong Group Athletics (SGA) manhandled Al Wahda Sports Club-Syria 89-67 for its second straight win in the 33rd Dubai International Basketball Championship on Saturday evening in United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Quiambao, who just last December, led De La Salle University to the UAAP men's basketball crown, finished with a team-high 24 points.

Another La Salle stalwart in Francis Escandor chipped in 18, built around five triples.

Overall, Strong Group shot the lights out at the Al Nasr Club gym, finishing with 17 triples in the one-sided game.

Former Gilas Pilipinas naturalized player Andray Blatche bounced back from a scoreless outing against UAE as he scored 12 markers, the same output Filipino-Australian gunner Jordan Heading produced.

American McKenzie Moore churned out eight points, four rebounds and six assists, while former NBA star Dwight Howard, who scored just five points, made his presence felt on the defensive end with 10 rebounds and four blocks.

Former Oklahoma City Thunder wingman Andre Roberson also scored just five points, but grabbed seven boards and three assists.

The win was a fitting follow up to Strong Group's 82-66 tournament debut victory against host UAE late Friday evening.

The Charles Tiu-coached Philippine club team will be shooting for its third straight win in as many days when it goes up against Lebanese club team Homenetmen on Sunday evening.
