VM: Firecracker ban ‘as good as it is’

The Vice Mayor of Davao City, J Melchor Quitain, has expressed his support for the Firecracker Ban Ordinance following the controversial use of large combustible sparkles during the recent Paghinugyaw: Sugat sa Bag-ong Tuig celebration. Despite the mixed reactions from netizens regarding the use of sparkles, Quitain emphasized the importance of the ordinance in protecting the community from firecracker-related tragedies. He stated that if there is a need to revisit the ordinance, the city council will deliberate on it in the best interest of the Dabawenyos. The organizer of the event clarified that the use of sparkles did not violate the firecracker ban, as it has been a part of the city's major events for several years. Additionally, the head of the Public Safety and Security Office disclosed that the City Tourism Operations Office and other organizations associated with the celebration had coordinated to ensure the overall safety and security of the event. Furthermore, the head of the City Tourism Operations Office mentioned plans to hold a coordination meeting with other city and security stakeholders to issue a statement regarding the Firecracker Ban Ordinance. The ordinance, implemented since 2002, aims to prohibit the manufacture, sale, distribution, possession, and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices within Davao City for the safety, peace, order, and security of the community.
