Envi group condemns anew garbage dumping at Panigan-Tamugan

The Davao City-based environmental group, Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability (Idis) Inc., has strongly condemned the unlawful dumping of garbage at the critical Panigan-Tamugan Watershed. The group emphasized that this not only poses a threat to the environment but also endangers the well-being of the local community. The Panigan-Tamugan River is a crucial water source for the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project (DCBWSP), which provides water to every household in Davao. The recent discovery of garbage along the river, particularly near the intake facility of Apo Agua Infrastructura, Inc., has raised concerns about the potential contamination of the water supply. Idis has urged the public, especially vloggers, bloggers, and social media influencers, to refrain from recreational activities in protected areas and to promote responsible behavior. Additionally, they have called for increased efforts by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) and local officials to enforce regulations and enhance surveillance to prevent further damage to the watershed. Idis emphasized the shared responsibility of the people, government, and other stakeholders in preserving natural resources. Apo Agua spokesperson, May Che Capili, highlighted the challenges faced by the Watershed Management Council, particularly concerning the accumulation of garbage. Capili emphasized the need for riverbank rehabilitation and urged the public to protect the watershed, which serves as the primary source of drinking water for the area. In response to these concerns, Idis has called for the strict enforcement of existing regulations, such as the Ordinance Regulating Recreational Activities within the Watershed Areas of Davao City and the Watershed Code. The group also emphasized the importance of education campaigns to promote proper waste management and environmental preservation. This latest incident follows previous reports of excessive littering and irresponsible behavior at the Panigan-Tamugan River, prompting urgent calls for collective action to safeguard this vital natural resource.
