Over 40 Ecuador prison officials taken hostage by inmates amid a violent campaign by gangs have been released. The SNAI prisons agency stated that 24 guards and 17 administrative employees were freed, while 133 guards and three employees are still held hostage. President Daniel Noboa initiated a military crackdown on criminal groups, leading to a confrontation with narco gangs. The violence resulted in 19 deaths, including a guard killed in clashes in El Oro.
