Role of village leaders in public service cited

SEN. Bong Go has emphasized his legislative efforts to support barangay leaders in fulfilling their mandates and enhancing public service delivery in their communities.

The senator made the emphasis during the Liga ng mga Barangay National Congress Cluster 6 in Pasay City on October 23.

Speaking to barangay leaders from various provinces, Go underscored the importance of empowering local officials to enhance their capacity to serve their communities.

The event gathered the last cluster of barangay officials from Iloilo City, Iloilo province, Northern Samar, Davao de Oro, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao City, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato, Cotabato province and Zamboanga Sibugay.

"You are the pillars of our government. You are on the frontline in bringing service to every community and home," said Go during his speech as he acknowledged the vital role the barangay officials play in the country's governance.

He called the barangay leaders "heroes of everyday life" who bring essential services to communities despite the hardships.

Go also took the opportunity to share vital legislative measures he is advancing in the Senate to directly benefit barangay officials, including Senate Bill (SB) 197, also known as the Magna Carta for Barangays, which aims to provide barangay officials with fair compensation and benefits.

"With the amount of sacrifice you have made, it is only fitting that you have proper recognition and support from the government," stressed Go.

Go also filed SB 2802, establishing a six-year fixed term for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials. He explained that this would give barangay leaders more time to implement long-term plans for their communities.

The senator also discussed the importance of supporting barangay health workers through SB 427, which proposes monthly honorariums and other benefits for these essential front-liners.

"They are our main front-liners in community health, so they need adequate recognition and support," he remarked, noting the critical role these workers play in safeguarding public health at the grassroots level.
