Blazers extend streak, rout Bombers

(UPDATE) COLLEGE of Saint Benilde solidified its top seed position in the NCAA 100 men's basketball tournament with a convincing 80-65 win over Jose Rizal University (JRU) at the FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan City on Sunday.

Allen Liwag made a double-double performance of 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Ian Torres led the scoring with 16 point

"We all know JRU is also good in rebounding, so I made sure to take all the ball and match up their grit inside the paint," Liwag said.

The victory improved the Blazers' record to 10-2, tightening their grip on the top spot.

JRU suffered its fourth consecutive loss, falling to 3-9.

Benilde fueled by a 52.4 percent field goal percentage and only 12 turnovers.

JRU managed just 34.8 percent shooting.

Coach Charles Tiu praised JRU's competitiveness but emphasized Benilde's focus on their goals.

"JRU is a good team, it is tough to go against them. You can see the games where they lost it was close. We need to make sure that we play better in every game and focus on ourselves. Gratefully, we played well," Tiu said.

"We have to work hard, we have not clinched a Final Four spot yet. Our goal right now is to finish as a top team," he added.

JRU's Joshua Guiab scored 17 points, and Shawn Argente added 14.

After ending the first half with a 42-33 advantage, Benilde did not look back in the third canto after scoring 26 points and limiting JRU to seven, 68-38.

The Blazers continued to punish the Heavy Bombers until the last quarter after leading by 33 points, 73-40.

With the wide discrepancy in scoring, the Heavy Bombers could not trim the lead and trail closer as the clock expired with Benilde winning by a 15-point margin.
