Ateneo denies home team UST for second straight win

MANILA, Philippines — The Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles spoiled the UST Growling Tigers at their home turf UST Quadricentennial Pavilion on Saturday, escaping with their second straight win, 67-64, in the UAAP Season 87 men's basketball tournament.

Ateneo got off to a 17-4 start and when push came to shove down the stretch, the Tab Baldwin-mentored team showed composure.

Sean Quetevis came up with a steal on Nic Cabanero for a layup and a 66-62 lead for Ateneo in the last 11.7 seconds.

Kyle Paranada pulled UST within two before Ian Espinosa split his charities for a 3-point Blue Eagles lead.

The Growling Tigers had one last chance to tie following Espinosa's second miss, racing down and ball found Christan Manaytay.

Chris Koon secured the win for Ateneo, though, coming up with a steal as Manaytay couldn't even hoist a shot.

The Blue Eagles improved to 3-6, tied with the FEU Tamaraws in sixth place as of posting time.

On the other hand, the Growling Tigers suffered their third straight loss for a 4-6 slate, still in fourth place.
