Knights slay Chiefs to take back-to-back wins

MANILA, Philippines — Colegio de San Juan de Letran took its swords and slain Arellano University, 86-79, to take its second consecutive victory in the NCAA 100 men's basketball tournament at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Tuesday. Veteran Pao Javillonar, who is also drafted in PBA made a career-high performance of 28 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. "What motivate me is our last year performance, we want to be back on track, we want to bring back the legacy of Letran, and this all starts here. PBA can wait, and I am focusing in the present," Javillonar said. Down by 13 points in the end of the first half, the Knights trimmed the Chiefs lead to three, 69-63, courtesy of Jimboy Estrada, Kobe Monje, and James Jumao-os. The Knights opened the final quarter with a 14-4 run as Javillonar dominated the paint, scoring from a fastbreak play, muscling a layup, and a putback, while James Miller put up a two, and Deo Cuajao scored from a corner triple, 77-73. Arellano's Renzo Abiera fired back-to-back triples to give his team the lead, 79-77, but Javillonar once more stormed the paint and completed his and-one play. In the last two minutes of the clock, Nat Montecillo scored his only basket, and Estrada drained the shot clock with a pull up jumper, 84-79. With 31.6 seconds remaining, Estrada sealed Letran's victory with a layup, 86-79. Letran only finished with two wins in the previous season (2-16), and looks ahead the dark days for the days are over after a 2-1 win-loss card early in the season. "Somehow, it was a good start for us. Again we still have games. I am hoping that we can get the 3 and 4, we will do our very best to reach the final four," head coach Allen Ricardo said. Maverick Vinoya scored 16 points for Arellano, while Cyril Hernal and Lorenz Capulong both added 11 points, but it was all not enough as the Chiefs are in their three-game losing skid.
