Damaged section of Halsema restored

BENGUET — Typhoon Enteng and the monsoon rains failed to stop workers from restoring the damaged section of the Halsema Highway, one of the primary routes in the Cordillera region. The damaged section in Bakun, Benguet, has been restored even as farmers, who have been hard up in transporting their produce since the section of the highway eroded during Typhoon Carina on August 23, thanked the government for its swift action. The P4-million fund used for the restoration works, especially through gabion-type riprap, was released by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) through the initiative of Rep. Eric Go Yap. Socioeconomic activities in northern Benguet and some parts of Mountain Province, Ifugao and the Ilocos Region were crippled when the road section eroded. To fast-track the restoration works, workers worked three shifts even during the holidays. Thousands of farmers and commuters used the alternate routes but had to bear additional two to three hours to reach their destinations in the capital town of La Trinidad and nearby Baguio City.
